Spearfish Tennis Association -  Middle School Boys Tennis Developmental Program

tennis playerThe Spearfish Tennis Association is offering a middle school tennis program this spring for all Spearfish area 6th, 7th, and 8th grade boys. Joe Doerges will be running the program with assistance from other Spearfish Tennis Association members.

This program is for any 6th, 7th, or 8th grade boy in the Spearfish area. Since tennis is not an official middle school activity at Spearfish MS, any area MS boy may participate in this program.

Team t-shirts order deadline is March 19, 2021. Other apparel can be ordered online from Alpine Impressions

Practices are Monday - Friday from 3:30-5:00pm starting March 15th ending May 14th (weather permitting). We will practice at the HS tennis courts when the HS is out of town. Players are not required to attend all practices, but it is helpful for staffing purposes to know when your child will not be at practice. Practice schedule and meets are posted on the STA Calendar.

At this time we have three scheduled matches on Saturdays - 1 in Spearfish and 2 in Rapid City. More information will be posted when dates are finalized.

Participants will need proper practice clothes, T-shirt, shorts with pockets, tennis shoes, warm clothing for those cooler days. NO flip flops, jeans. We will provide water but they need to have their own water bottle. SCHOOL PHYSICAL IS REQUIRED!

The Spearfish Tennis Association will provide tennis rackets or students may bring their own.

Players will learn:

  • basic tennis skills (footwork, grip, forehand, backhand, volley, serve, and overhead)
  • rules of the game
  • tennis etiquette
  • keeping score (regular, no-add, and tie-breaker)

7th and 8th graders attending Spearfish Middle School who have adequate skills as determined by the coaching staff, may participate on the Spearfish HS boys tennis team.  Those studentswishing to move up to HS tennis will need to commit to attending all high school tennis practices and meets. High School practices are Monday-Friday 3:30-6:00pm and the season runs from March 15th – May 18th.
